Betta Care

How To Keep A Betta?

WATER CHANGES
(!!!NEVER USE DISTILLED/BOTTLED WATER!!! see water conditioning page)
Basically, anything less than 3.8litres(1 Gallon) , its recommended to have 3-4days 100% conditioned water changes. This would prevent all sorts of sickness into your betta.
-1 Gallon or more, change at 100% conditioned water per week.
-5 Gallon Above, you can change it at 50% water change per 2-3weeks.
In Singapore With SU830 container it is measured approx. at 3 litres at 3/4 bottle full, I change it once every week still works fine. (Plus Siphoning(with pipette/dropper) all waste by the betta whenever you sees it).
*Waste/Poop of betta causes ammonia spike which causes harmful diseases to your betta.*

Something I Wanna Add; NEVER Uses a Bottle/tank that you cleaned using SOAP!! You shall NEVER USE SOAP TO CLEAN/WASH YOUR TANK. Or Never used an oily used tank(Keropok/biscuit bottle) which you used before, because you've cleaned it and you think its clean enough, my advise is Don't Take Chances!

Washing of tank, Just use your bare cleaned hands, rub the tank gently with clean running tap water will do.
*If needed to; use slightly hot water and rinse the tank it should kill all bacteria if its a infected bacteria tank.*

WATER CAPACITY
There's few breeders saying that A tropical fish has to be in a 5 Gallon Tank Minimum(Thats 19Litres!!!). Some breeders said that the bigger your water capacity is (In terms of width and length, wideness and not depth), the longer your betta will live.I doesn't know how true, but if its your own life probably yup, more space i will be happier living. Generally A BETTA Lifespan is about 2 - 4.5 years. Well, so this is just a reference guide.
---------------------------------------------------------------
PH Level
Well, In Singapore our PH level is 7.2 roughly(Tested by myself with a PH TESTER),our tap-water parameters are SAFE however you will still need Ketapang Leaves/Traditional Water Conditioning or Water Conditioner to remove Chlorine AT LEAST.
betta fish prefers as close to neutral water as possible, 7.0, but can manage in water that is between 6.5 and 7.5. (Best at 6.8)
---------------------------------------------------------------
WATER TEMPERATURE

Bettas like their home to be warm and cozy, so keeping the water temperature between 75°F(23.89 ° Celsius) to 82°F(27.78° Celsius ) degrees is ideal. (Up to 85°(28-29° Celsius for breeding). Do not below 72 ° F(22.22° Celsius) which will caused in lethargy, constipation, fin rot, and an increased susceptibility to disease.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Feeding Betta:
Use Well-Known Pellets such as: Hikari Betta Bio Gold or Ocean Nutrition Atison Betta Pro (Do Not Feed Flakes)
Feeding Amount: up to 2 servings per day, 3-6 Pellets Per Serving(Depending on size of betta & size of pellet) (Stomach of a betta is their eye) (7-8hrs Intervals Minimum)

*Starve your betta a day or 2 in a week this will keep them healthy bladder/diet. Your Betta can last up to 7 days without food.

(For special occasions, feed frozen brine shrimp or blood worms. Though live food may be exciting to watch, frozen and dried products are generally best. They are safer and free from potential parasites. Frozen or dried blood worms make for a great treat.)

Clean up any extra food that your Betta does not eat. Similarly, watch your Betta to see if he/she spits up any food. This could be a sign that your Betta is a picky eater, or it could also mean that the pellets are too big for the Betta's mouth. Ironically, most big fish food companies don't realize that Betta fish have smaller mouths than, say, goldfish or others.
